Willson - Laura Maddox

Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Journal October 27, 1888

A telegram was received on Sunday from Greencastle, announcing the sudden death of Mrs. Laura V. Willson, relict of the late Col. S. C. Willson, which occurred at that place some time during Saturday night. Mrs. Willson had been on a visit in the city with her daughter. Mrs. V. Q. Irwin, and left for Greencastle on Saturday afternoon in good health and spirits. She arrived at the residence of G. H. Brown, her son-in-law, with whom she was making her home, and retired as usual on Saturday evening apparently well. When Mr. and Mrs. Brown arose Sunday morning they were shocked to find that life was extinct. The vital spark had gone out without a struggle and she passed away as if failing asleep. Laura Virginia Maddox was born in 1816 and was therefore 71 years of age. She was married to Samuel C. Willson, Oct, 20, 1835 and in the year following came to Crawfordsville. She was the mother of seven children, of whom four survive, three daughters and one son, Mrs. H. H. Marsh of Florida, Mrs. Irwin, of this city, Mrs. G. H. Brown, of Greencastle, and Robert B. Willson of Louisville. Two sons are dead, Henry Lane and Levi D. Her husband died in June, 1881. Her remains were brought to this city, Monday afternoon, arriving here on the 1:48 train. Upon the arrival of the remains in this city they were taken to the residence of V. Q. Irwin, wheres services were held conducted by the Rev Dr. Tuttle, after which they were taken to Oak Hill and deposited by the side of her husband. A number of friends from Greencastle, accompanied the relatives to attend the funeral. - thanks muches to Kim H for this one :)
